A New Zealand tree fern characterised by thin, soft fronds that die off as the fern grows taller, leaving a tidy skirt of dead fronds. C. smithii is most cold-tolerant of the native tree ferns, but still benefits from a sheltered position protected from heavy frosts, strong winds, and harsh sun. Requires moist soils. Low maintenance.
