Considered the most attractive alder. Prefers moist, fertile sites on river banks and in gullies. Forms tall, open shelter belts. Hardwood timber. Shallow, spreading root system. Occurs naturally in association with Douglas Fir. Space at 2-4m centres for shelter. Deciduous. Cold hardy.
